NATURAL HISTORY AND THE LAGOON
Musei Civici Veneziani (Natural History Museum, Planetarium)
Museum of Natural History
It is situated in the Fontego dei Turchi, on the Grand Canal. An important scientific institution, it contains various collections and an important library; it is also the centre of activities for surveys and research into the lagoon of Venice and its fauna. The museum is currently undergoing extensive restoration work, due to be completed by the end of 2005. Two interesting sections of the museum remain open to the public:
- A room dedicated to the Scientific Expedition to Niger (Sahara Gadoufaoua), containing a very powerful display of the massive original skeleton of the Ouranosaurus nigeriensis and the remains and partial skeleton of the giant crocodile Sarcosuchus imperator, accompanied by a number of other fossils found during the expedition and extensive material that explains and illustrates their significance.
- A new five-metre aquarium on the ground floor, used to reproduce the extraordinary eco-system of the natural rocky formations off the coast of the Venetian lagoon (tegnue) and illustrate their rich bio-diversity, comprising more than 50 different species.
Planetarium of Venice
In terms of its size and facilities, the Venice Planetarium is one of the biggest in Italy. It is housed in purpose-built premises within the park created on the site of the old Fun Fair on Lungomare D?Annunzio and offers a highly realistic reproduction of all the various areas of the heavenly vault. The Planetarium can seat sixty people and is fully wheelchair-accessible. It is run by the Associazione Astrofili Veneziani, which provides teaching services on astronomy and astro-physics for both the general public and schools.
