Treaty of Schengen. Ten Countries of the European Union have agreed to this treaty: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Holland, Portugal, Spain. The treaty of Schengen has abolished the frontiers control through these countries, therefore it is not necessary to show your passport at the border. It is however advisable to travel with an ID card just in case you need to show it during your stay.
Tourists coming from other countries of the European Union not participating in the treaty of Schengen or from Cyprus, Croatia, Malta, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Norway, Monaco, Slovenia, Switzerland need to show their identity card.
Tourists coming from other countries are requested to show their passports at customs. Tourists are recommend to take their passports always with them during their stay , because it indicates you entered the country legally.
Suggestions. It is advisable to keep a photocopy of your passport or ID card with you and leave the original ones in the hotel or in a security box for the rest of your stay. These copies can be useful if you lose your bag or you are robbed. In that case you can show the copies to the police at the time of report.
